August Team #1 2026

Tuesday, August 4th

Today we traveled through the amazing Honduran countryside to El Matazano. This is one of the farthest communities that we visit (about 2 hours). A village without electricity. Today we had 53 families come to the clinic. Many families are quite large with lots of precious children.

Gary gave his cross to the community leader who did a great job greeting us-they formed a good connection, and he touched Gary’s heart.

Jackie laughed when she told us that teen boys are the same all over the world when she caught  them doing sidewalk chalk graffiti!!!  They quickly erased their artwork!

Julie  worked in dental last year and experienced much more distress and crying over being laid on the scale than those undergoing an extraction. They sure can be wiggly when you try to lay them on the scale.

Louisa had fun in fluoride treatment by having the kids show her how they brush their teeth using the tiger tooth stuffy.  She tried to make a game of it because the fluoride does not taste good and some of the young ones even cry.

We met 2 cousins, both 14 years old, that are in the 9th grade. The school in El Matazano (as in most of the mountain communities) has  K-6th grade classes. To attend higher grades the students have to find a way to get to the nearest school. These two girls drive a motorcycle to school about a half hour each way. These two are very determined. One of the girls wants to be an engineer and the other wants to become a doctor. We are all rooting for them to fulfill their dreams. 

As the day wound down the kids enjoyed the bubble machine and getting tattoos and having their nails polished until it was time to go home. 

We returned to Alfredo’s House to the smells of a delicious dinner waiting for us-thanks Karen and Albita for all you do for us and the teams that come to Honduras.

We closed the evening by sharing our stories of the day and with devotion. Jan gave a wonderful devotion that encouraged us to “be present” and to be still and “listen”. 

PS we had two Doctors and Joseph who were “pretty in pink” today!
