The day began with anxiety for some of our team as it was the first day in the clinic. What would this look like? How might we work together when many of us had only met for the first time just two short days ago? For new team members this was a time of not knowing what to expect. For seasoned teamers, it was a time of wondering what would be different and what they might learn.
After a two hour bus ride to Loma Larga, which was not only interesting but also adventurous, we settled in and set up shop at one of the school yards. As the day unfolded, the sounds of children laughing and playing touched our hearts. Additionally our team addressed medical concerns and listened to families’ stories with love and compassion. By the end of the day, there were a total of 171 people seen in the medical clinic.
Our coleader Mary commented that “while the first day usually brings with it some generalized nervousness … the team began showing signs of formation early in the day.” The first day of clinic ran smoothly and was successful because we were unified in mind, body, and spirit. We worked alongside one another to truly be “Sus Manos” in action.
One of the key events of the day came from the Dental Clinic. During our evening debriefing session, Shaun and Bob shared that if it were not for the donation of new dental equipment some of the procedures performed would not have occurred.
Before turning in for the evening Mary led everyone in an evening devotion that focused on embracing our gifts and talents. She encouraged us to not be afraid of allowing God to use us or the team in a mighty way. Mary shared this scripture:
2 Timothy 4:1-2 (NIV) “ In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, ad in view of his kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the word; be prepared in season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.”
Mary reminded us that we have formed a cohesive team, each one bringing his or her gift. “Show up; be present; serve others; each of us is uniquely gifted. Don’t discount what comes so easily to us.”
