The NICU Team is in Honduras!

Tuesday, October 22, 2019

Day One for the NICU team started very early, with alarm bells ringing around 3:00 a.m. in Richmond and Savannah. Patti, Anita and Frances departed from Richmond, meeting the Savannah ladies (Diane, Heather and Jennifer) in Miami for the last leg of the journey to San Pedro Sula. The flight was full but pleasantly uneventful, with several of our team members having an opportunity to share with others details about where we were going and what we were going to do there. It’s always great to engage with new people and tell them about the great work being done in Honduras by The Friends of Barnabas.

After getting settled in at our hotel, we were able to visit two of the hospitals that we’ll be working at later this week. We were welcomed by doctors and nurses there, and our team got an early glimpse of the babies that are being cared for. They were impressed by the compassion and quality of care being provided, despite the limited resources.

Dinner at a local restaurant was quite delicious and enjoyed by all. The night ended with preparations for tomorrow’s all day workshop that will bring the S.T.A.B.L.E.® neonatal education program to more than 40 Honduran NICU nurses and neonatologists from ten hospitals in the region.

S.T.A.B.L.E.® is the world’s most widely distributed and implemented neonatal education program to focus exclusively on the post-resuscitation/pre-transport stabilization of sick infants. The nurses and doctors here have been eagerly anticipating this learning opportunity, and our team is excited to share this opportunity with them. But, more about that in tomorrow’s journal.
