Today was our sixth and final work day of team Reveille’s mission trip. As we set up the clinics and the El Obo community patiently waited, its many children flocked outside the dental clinic. While this station is often the most intimidating for children and adults alike, today it was no match for the elementary age patients who quickly took over the dental waiting area with their enthusiasm for coloring and stickers.
Child after child waited to receive coloring pages and to pass around the highly coveted box of 24 Crayola crayons. They also made sure their peers were having fun coloring. Older kids advocated for younger ones, pulling desks into the shade for them to color on and asking for the colors they wanted in addition to their own. The younger children were quick to imitate the older kids’ example not only with coloring but also their approach to the entire day, offering to help unload our supplies from the bus and staying stoic as they received various medical treatments.
We ended the week having seen hundreds of patients in the medical, dental, and vision clinics, having weighed and measured many curious and some objecting young Hondurans, and having distributed important vitamins and fluoride treatment to dozens of families. Each community’s unfailing patience and appreciation for the Friends of Barnabas and the assistance it provides addressing many community and personal challenges made it easy to be thankful for the blessings of the kingdom of God especially here in Honduras. - Walker Speer
