Staff Working on Six Sigma Projects

Erin Caldwell

The Friends of Barnabas Honduran medical staff strive every day to provide the best care possible to our communities and our pediatric patients. We are all aware of the fact that we can improve on what we do and how we do it. Thursday and Friday of this past week, our staff spent a total of 11 hours working together to design their next quality improvement projects.

Two years ago we designed and completed our first three Six Sigma projects. They all were extremely successful. This year, Board member Bruce Carter, led the medical staff in designing two more projects.

In the coming year our Extended Care staff will work together to determine the reasons our patients become delinquent in their visits at the Barnabas House clinic, and then determine what we can do to improve their level of compliance.

The second project is more process oriented, focusing on our Early Childhood Development Program. The ECD staff will look at how we recruit and train community leaders to do age appropriate developmental screenings, the effectiveness of our parent education, and our ability to identify children with delays in a timely fashion.

Our staff has a great deal of work ahead of them, but they are very excited about their projects and the possibilities that come with them. We owe Bruce Carter a great deal of gratitude for sharing his knowledge and expertise with us. He is a very patient man!
