Locked Out

Wednesday, October 22, 2014

The team’s morning started with breakfast and then we were quickly on our way to Terrerito.

This community is located in the area of Santa Cruz de Yojoa, Cortes and was founded in 1910; there are 110 families with 93 houses in this community. 70% of homes are equipped with latrines; 50% of these houses have the latrines inside the house and the other 50% have the latrines outside the house. The community’s water source is 22 kilometers away.

Terrerito’s school has kindergarten through high school with a total of 82 students. The nearest health center is 10 kilometers away in Santa Cruz de Yojoa.

This community has some children with congenital problems such as Down Syndrome, Equinovarus Foot and neurological illness. The majority of births occur at the hospital. There are no midwives in this community and the incidence of pregnancy in teenagers is high. [if !supportLineBreakNewLine] [endif]

Several team members gave away their crosses today! Janet gave her cross away to an 85-year-old woman who was crying because she was so happy the team was there to treat the community. Marie gave her cross away to Lisbeth, a pretty little 9 year old who kept coming to Marie for attention. Cookie gave her cross away to a lady that came into to dental clinic for extractions. She had a tough time, but withstood the pain. A real trooper! Jenny gave her cross away to a little girl who was leading her blind grandmother through the stations.

We finished with the last few patients and loaded the bus only to learn that someone had locked the keys in one of the other vehicles! Our departure was delayed almost an hour but the men were finally able to unlock the door and we set out for home.

We had a very good day today and are saddened by the fact that our week is halfway through.

Devotions were given by Pastor David Westmoreland about the “top of the mountain.” We truly had a mountaintop experience today and we're looking forward to another great day tomorrow.
