The Sus Manos team arrived in Honduras yesterday afternoon. Our team is composed of five advanced practitioners, several nurses, and a crew of non-medical volunteers bringing various other valuable skills to the table, including teaching and pastoral experience. We’ve spent our first weekend here in Honduras preparing our supplies, minds, and hearts for the clinic days ahead.
Day one brought a trip to a local waterfall, where we experienced the beauty of God’s creation in this country we came to serve. Our brief outing also offered an opportunity for team building and an opportunity to get to know the people we will serve alongside in the upcoming days. Afterward, it was time to get to work. The afternoon was spent sorting hundreds of pills, preparing well bags, and making toothpaste out of baking soda and salt. We packed vitamins, common household medications, and hopefully a little bit of God’s love into each bag. This was followed by training sessions and a delicious dinner out together.
The most meaningful part of the day for many of us was the evening of devotions and the Blessing of the Hands. We read Matthew 25:35-40, discussing the opportunity we will have tomorrow to be the hands and feet of Jesus in the community we will be serving. As we visit a small community where a middle school education or access to medical care requires an hour- long walk each way to reach, we’ll be praying and searching for opportunities to be God’s hands. We concluded the night with the Blessing of the Hands, where we sat together and reflected on all of the things our hands have done in our lives, from playing in the mud or making crafts as children, to our day-to-day work at home. We went around the table and prayed together, blessing each other’s hands in Jesus’s name for the work we will do this week. That is the inspiration behind our team’s name, after all - “Sus Manos” (“His Hands”), and we can’t wait to see all of the ways God uses our hands to serve our patients this week.
