Over the river and through the woods, Friends of Barnabas goes.

The journey to today’s village was absolutely breathtaking. As we wound our way up the mountains, coffee trees lined the path, and the beauty of Honduras surrounded us at every turn.

Just outside the village, we came to a river crossing. Unfortunately, our bus became stuck while trying to make its way across. We unloaded and continued on foot while our incredible bus driver, Geovany, worked alongside team members and villagers to build a makeshift bridge out of wooden planks. Thanks to their determination and teamwork, the bus eventually made it across. Meanwhile, the children of the village came running down the road, excited to greet us and walk with us the rest of the way.

The village itself has a unique history. An old logging company still owns the land but no longer uses it. Many of the former workers chose to stay and have built their lives there, though they must still pay “rent” to remain on the property. The community president has dedicated himself to studying agriculture so that he can better serve his neighbors and help the village reclaim ownership of its land within the next two years. His commitment reflects the perseverance and hope that define this community.

Throughout the day, we met families facing challenges that many of us can scarcely imagine. One mother came to the clinic experiencing chest tightness and numbness in her fingers. As we spoke with her, we realized she was suffering from anxiety attacks brought on by the overwhelming responsibility she carries. She is the sole caregiver and provider for her two children, ages one and seven. In order to work and provide food for her family, she must leave her one-year-old in the care of her seven-year-old. While neighbors help whenever they can, everyone in the community must work, and there are no childcare resources available.

Stories like hers can be heartbreaking. Yet even amid hardship, we are reminded that God is always present, bringing hope and new life.

Today, we had the privilege of performing one of the first ultrasounds a five-month pregnant mother had ever received. Despite being halfway through her pregnancy, she had never had access to prenatal care. For the first time, she was able to see her baby on the screen. We watched together as the baby moved, kicked, and even appeared to stick out its tongue. The child looked healthy and strong. Moments like these remind us why this work matters.

Every person we encountered in this village welcomed us with kindness, gratitude, and resilience. They continue to work tirelessly to strengthen their community, even when the obstacles before them seem impossible. At the end of the day, the community president asked to take a photo with our team. Then, before we left, he prayed over us, a gift that touched each of our hearts.

As we reflect on this week, it is difficult to say goodbye. Yet we find comfort in knowing that this mission does not end when we leave. Friends of Barnabas is built on continuity, compassion, and commitment.

For 26 years, this foundation has walked alongside the people of Honduras, supporting healthier futures, stronger communities, and lasting hope. The impact extends far beyond those receiving care; it transforms everyone fortunate enough to be part of the journey.

We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to continue this legacy, and we pray that it will continue for many years to come. Until next time, Honduras. Hasta la próxima.
