El Cielito

May 18, 2026

Today was clinic day one. We started the day with a beautiful sunrise and breakfast while listening to a song to honor our long-term friend and mentor Patti Wagner. Patti is not traveling with us this year but has travelled with the May team for many years. Following breakfast, we had an introduction and integration of the American and Honduran team. Then we traveled into the mountains of Santa Barbara to El Cielito “Little Sky.”

At the end of each clinic day the team summarizes their day with highs and lows. So, the clinic day blogs will be a quick summary of highs and lows shared by the team.

Today’s lows mostly revolved around learning the electronic medical record (charting system), learning how to work smoothly with an interpreter, crying babies who were nervous about treatment, teeth extractions and English jokes not quite translating well into Spanish.

Today’s highs were vibing with our interpreters, using an ultrasound brought by Dr. Alexander to visualize a nexplanon and a fetus for a mom who had never had an ultrasound or visualized her baby before. Dr. Allison and Dylan both met little ones with their matching names. Ken got to enjoy coloring and hanging out with all the kiddos after surviving assisting with multiple tooth extractions. Kim Gave away her cross to a teacher named Saira who was integral in organizing and making sure the community was ready for clinic today. Julie got to know a sweet elderly lady and Elias got to know many of the Honduran team members. Rhonda and Dr. Richaela were both very excited to see the clinic come to fruition and see the community dressed to their best.

On the way home from clinic, we stopped for coffee, enjoying the super fresh coffee from the Santa Barbara coffee farms. It was so sweet to experience fresh coffee that hasn’t spent weeks to months being shipped to the US.

This evening we took a tour of the FOBF compound including the gardens, greenhouse, Barnabas House and grounds. We finished our night with the best tortilla soup, flan and a time of reflection and prayer.

Thanks again for following along!
