*A Rainy Day, Full Hearts: El Capulín with Friends of Barnabas*
Our January Trinity team made its third visit to El Capulín, a small community named for the cherry trees that grow nearby. The day greeted us with steady rain, which meant fewer families were able to travel to the site. Even so, the spirit of the day was anything but small.
Despite the weather and the smaller turnout, the Honduran team truly hit their stride. Supplies were unloaded, stations were arranged, and the clinic came together with impressive alacrity. It was a joy to watch everything fall into place so smoothly, a testament to teamwork and growing experience.
The fluoride and dental stations had encouraging news—many healthy smiles! Virginia and Roger made a strong fluoride team, working efficiently and cheerfully. Moments like these remind us that prevention and education are just as important as treatment.
The medical clinic stayed full for most of the day. Doctors and volunteers worked side by side, and it was especially meaningful to see the doctors mentoring as they cared for patients. Karson and Kristen were able to assist with blood pressure measurements and blood sugar tests, gaining hands-on experience while serving the community.
One of the most touching parts of the day was the giving of crosses. Each cross carried prayer, presence, and compassion. Kristen gave her cross to a mother who needed reassurance. Mark gave his to the mother of two teachers at the local school. Linda and Chris shared theirs with an older man whose younger children now live far away. Joseph gave a cross to a man named José.
Keith formed a special bond with a boy on the autism spectrum who quickly became everyone’s friend. This young boy lit up the room and captured all of our hearts. Keith gave him his cross, a simple gesture filled with love and connection.
There were also moments of unexpected encouragement. Kristen gently motivated a young boy to eat more vegetables by pointing out that his brother was growing faster than he was—sometimes a little sibling rivalry is just the encouragement a child needs!
Even on a wet day with fewer families, El Capulín reminded us why we come. God’s work is not measured by numbers alone, but by relationships formed, compassion shared, and hope renewed. We left grateful—for healthy teeth, full clinics, growing teams, and hearts touched in ways both big and small.
