El Caliche

May 21, 2026

Today we visited El Caliche!

It was quite the adventure over the hills and through the woods! Similar to Tuesday a common low for today was the drive was long and bumpy and didn’t sit well for those who suffer from motion sickness and/or small bladders. However, many shared the beautiful agriculture and seeing new luscious green areas was also a high.

Other lows shared were the overall poor condition of the school/buildings/bathroom today, a small collection of very skinny malnourished dogs that frequented the clinic, and extremely poor dental health.

The clinic got quite overcrowded as the weather heated up and everyone tried to hide from the sun and make sure they got treated. So mid-day got more than a little over stimulating and overheated for many. We did have one staff whom the heat in combo with a headache made quite ill, but our medical staff did what we are here to do and got them cooled, hydrated and treated for pain, and they were able to return to work by end of day.

Highs

Many started their day with meeting the sweetest 92-year-old man who was in terrific health for his age. He stated he didn’t have any complaints just came for new glasses. We all hope to be as healthy as him at 92.

Many team members said while the crowd and the space were a lot today, they were proud to say they still found their rhythm. Kim, Rhonda and Julie all had a blast coloring with the kids and created a mural of artwork on the wall. Dr. Rikayla had a patient pray over her and bless her today. The community leader led the Lord’s Prayer to start the morning. Catherine got to apply fluoride for the first time. Dr. Alexander was able to treat a little boy with an ear infection that he had for months. Emberli gave away her cross to a young woman experiencing severe depression and loneliness with her husband being gone for long periods of time in faraway cities to work to provide for her. Dr. Mike was able to tell a mother she was pregnant. The kids were just a little cranky this morning, most likely due to early rises and long walks, but that turned into early naps and lots of playful smiles in the afternoon/evening.

We came home to eat fried chicken, fix’ns and banana bread and laugh and joke as we have bonded this week. Then we talked about how we are created in Gods image and made to be here in the roll we are in this week. We ended the night sharing these highs and lows and preparing for tomorrow’s last clinic day!

Thanks for following along!
