We made it to the end of our first clinic day! Each day, our team loads up and heads to a different community in the surrounding areas.
Each patient first starts with registration, where our Honduran counterparts find them in our electronic medical record and do some initial screening for covid and dengue fever. Unfortunately, dengue is very prevalent in Honduras this year, and our team was briefed this morning on the importance of identifying cases early.
After getting through registration, they stop and see Blaine for de-worming and vitamins. After vitamins, kids are sent to dental for fluoride treatments with Alina. Up next is Lynn with blood pressure screenings and then over to Susan for weights and measures. Then, patients head into the medical clinic. Here, they may see one of our nurses, Kim, Christine, or Sara, or one of our docs, Dr. Jim or Dr. Dave. This team works closely with Linda in the pharmacy and send referrals for patients to be seen by Dra. Moncado or the physical therapist in our clinic. After their clinic visit, they head back to dental for any extractions or fillings with Gary and our dentists.
Some highlights of today that our team shared after dinner tonight:
Blaine playing soccer with some local community kids, despite the language barrier
Susan using flowers, grass, and sticks for makeshift tic-tac-toe in between weights and measures
Sara having some crazy clinic cases: a kiddo with an asthma exacerbation needing a nebulizer treatment, a non-healing wound, and an infant with epilepsy
Christine getting hugs and smiles from some sweet patients in the clinic!
Alina’s biggest fan was the sweetest girl in a little floral dress
Stay tuned for more!
