The Melon Medical Team started our week off strong. Our morning devotion reminded us that we are to be each other’s light; we are to recharge each other.  Our journey to Altos de Esquitrin, in the department of Valle, took all of 35 minutes.  We were greeted by the volunteers from Agrolibano, our parter Foundation in this week’s work.

Agrolibano is melon growing company.  Their foundation arm works with the communities where their workers live.  They do community development and support the education system.

Altos de Esquitrin has 120 families.  Their water is rationed.  Most homes have outside latrines, but several homes have nothing.  It is expensive to travel to health care facilities.

The team had a very hot and very busy day.  60 families were cared for with 35 referrals for further care.  The most common referral reason was hypertension.  The day was made so much easier because of the volunteer support and the cohesiveness of the team.

Erin shared her cross with two little boys, Jeffery and Allan, because they were brave and smiled while taking their yucky anti-parasite medicine.  Katie gave hers to a little boy as an encouragement to help care for his little baby brother with love and gentleness.  Dr. Joe gave his cross to a little 5-year-old who had given Dr. Joe a huge hug at the end of the day.

Our day ended watching Chris play with kids on the teeter-totter (the kids never touched the ground) and Chelsea getting dizzy playing with kids on the merry-go-round.  We are ready for cool showers, rest and another day of service.
