Today our team had the honor of serving the Mojarras Community for their final graduation visit by mountain medical teams. The leadership of this community has completed the required health education and training, and the families of the community have proven a commitment to healthy living, to providing safe water and nourishing food along with education for their children. The results are clear in the healthy smiles, strong and nourished bodies, and the attitude of the families of the community. Although they were collectively sad that the final visit had arrived, they were proud of what they had achieved.
What has been accomplished in this place is amazing. This community has filtered water in every house, concrete or tiled floors, electricity, and improved sanitation. The school has several large airy rooms filled with health education posters for the kids. The adults are literate, and the children even take part in discussions about their own health. Anyone who has participated on a mountain medical team will understand how significant this milestone is for a struggling small community in Honduras. Mojarras is an example of the best work of Friends of Barnabas Healthy Communities program and what a blessing that our team was able to participate in their graduation visit.
Most families came for wellness visits and although a few problems were identified, overall, the community members were healthy and thriving. Teresa and Diane identified two young mothers who were struggling with some heavy burdens and were able to offer encouragement along with prayers and a cross for both of these brave young women.
Although the day was overcast and sometimes rainy, both team members and children found enjoyment in a game of hopscotch. Thankfully, no injuries occurred during the adventure! And who knew Giovanni could jump rope?
It was a joy filled day, followed by a delicious meal and time to relax. After a wonderful devotion led by Bettye and Sasha it is now time to rest and prepare for tomorrow.
God bless and good night from all of us here at Alfredo’s House- Diane, Tade, Lynda, Bettye, Sasha, Lynn, Angela, Jo Ellen, Matthew, David, Shar, Teresa and Patti
