Serving our Neighbors

Tuesday, October 18, 2022

Each of us on the Harrisonburg team has our own way to jumpstart the day - a cup of coffee, a glimpse of the sunrise, a text to a loved one, or a few minutes of extra sleep. A clinic day behind us, we have had an opportunity to debrief. So, perhaps the joy and the weight of the work are a bit heavier today. Still, it's get up and coffee, and get up and go!

God gave us a beautiful, sunny day to travel to Terrero Blanco, Taulabe, Comayagua. We set up the clinics in the local school building and were again greeted this morning by a crowd of people waiting for services. The school director welcomed us and hurried to find the extra tables and trash cans we needed. The setup process is indeed amazing as the Honduran team demonstrates so much expertise to get the stations prepared and ensure that the families are registered and checked in on the mobile tablets. The Electronic Medical Records system is a blessing to bring continuity to care. Approximately 200 people received health services today!

Our wise team member, Jim, reminded us during today's devotion that God calls us to love our neighbors as ourselves. The seniors, fathers, mothers, and children are our neighbors. I observed our team members gently and patiently caring for our neighbors today. I also observed those neighbors offer a smile and a warm thank you! God is good and ever present in these special communities in Honduras.

To close today's message, one of our team members, Judy, offers her thoughts. "My dream to go on a mission trip to serve humanity finally came true. It was such an honor and a privilege to serve the Hondurans today. It was the greatest joy to see the children because they reminded me of when my three children were little. The only thing that bothered me most, was questioning....how much education will these children get? Here is a quote from the late Mr. Nelson Mandela, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world".

Thanks and we ask for your prayers for the people of Honduras - our neighbors!
