We woke up early on Monday excited for our first day of clinic in Honduras. After an excellent breakfast the medical staff met with our Honduran doctor to prepare for our day. The bus was loaded and we headed to Plancitos de Suyapa, a community of 120 families and an estimated 700 residents. After a reasonably short drive up some steep hillsides in the mountains we arrived at our clinic location. We were greeted by smiling faces and excited children. They came dressed in their Sunday best, including the little girl in her sparkly red dress and the toddler in his dress shirt and suspenders.
The team was pleased to ascertain the medical knowledge of the residents of the community. This is the third year the community has been a part of the community health development program. It is nice from a medical standpoint to see our health education is having a desired impact on the community. We served 32 family units and approximately 60 individual dental patients. Many residents of the community were working in the fields, as we saw on the way in, and many older children were seen walking back from school. The children really enjoyed the temporary tattoos they were given and stickers they received as they went from station to station. At the end of our fantastic day the team celebrated by blowing bubbles with the children. The joy on their faces was palpable as they chased them around the grassy area in front of the school. We were assisted in packing up at the end of the day by many members of the community, including the children, which made light work of our efforts.
After another excellent dinner of tortilla chicken soup and devotions we are headed to bed early tonight since we will have a longer journey tomorrow.
