Plan Grande

Wednesday, July 15, 2026

First off, I must disclose that I’m a first-timer as a volunteer with Friends of Barnabas, and Lord willing, I’ll be back again.

Our day started out amazing with a full team picture in our Friends of Barnabas t-shirts with smiles from everyone.

The morning set out with the day's temperature to be a high of 73 and 65% precipitation. The ride to Plan Grande seemed as if we were in a cloud as we drove in and out of the fog heading up the mountain for the day. As we arrived, the day’s location was beautiful with colors befitting a wonderful school for many happy children. The parents, as always were patiently gathered, for a day filled with time shared with immediate family members as well as some extended family, i.e. grandparents, aunts etc.

Fortunately, I was in the vitamin station and was able to spend time with all of them and see the smiling faces of each child that came for a check-up and extra special attention in the dental, vision and medical clinics, all offered by the Friends of Barnabas' amazing doctors and staff.

As a non-medical team member, I have been completely inspired by the professional, caring hearts of each of the medical staff. I have been equally touched by the other non-medical team members who jumped in to entertain the children with activities that passed the time while moms and dads were waiting to be seen. Playing with the children after my station is done has been the highlight of my trip each day. The joy on their faces from receiving stickers from the doctors makes me smile. I have noticed that even though I don't speak Spanish, a smile is the most universal connection ever. I have received more hugs per hour from these beautiful children than I have ever received in my life!

Our day ended with Lidia, Director of Programs and Operations, sharing two videos with the team called Healthy Honduras highlighting the history and growth of Friends of Barnabas within the Honduran Healthcare Community and Healthy Kids explaining the services provided to children with special medical needs.
