El Capulan

Wednesday, January 22, 2025

It was a wet and wonderful Wednesday as we trekked to El Capulan in a downpour.  As we arrived at the village, a crew of friendly people appeared eager to help unload and assist with assembling the clinic for the day.

After a long but rewarding day, a total of 107 individuals were seen in the medical clinics and 28 in the dental clinics! Among these individuals were four that stood out to our team members. The first, known as being Joseph’s twin, and perhaps the tallest man in Honduras, shared that he has been caring for his seven children by himself, even waking up daily at 0200 to ensure his children have everything they need and a good breakfast waiting for them when they wake up. Wendy, one of our Nurse Practitioners, spent time talking to this man and getting a better sense of the daily struggles he faces. Several factors were identified and the team at FOB was able to refer this gentleman to obtain the care he needs. We are hopeful that soon he will be able to get many restful nights of sleep, which he so deserves!

The second individual that stood out to the team was a young girl who exuded joy and happiness everywhere she went. She greeted us as we pulled into the village, painted pictures for members of the team and even brought all of her ‘amigas’ to come play. Upon our departure this little girl was giggling, happy as could be, and told Diana, our new friend from Germany, that “[we] really love you and can’t wait for you to all come back!”

Another pinnacle of the day comes from Kristin, a pediatrician, who got to tell a woman she was pregnant. After sharing this joyful news with the new mother, her daughter was gifted a doll which she immediately started to care for, excited that she will soon have a real baby to care for. The woman then rushed home with the pregnancy test to share the exciting news with her husband.

The last story we would like to share today comes from Hannah, an ER nurse, who cared for a young girl whose schoolteacher has mentioned on several occasions that she has issues paying attention in class. Hannah was able to educate the little girl's mother about tips to help set her daughter up for success in school, such as keeping in mind where the child is seated in the classroom and how reinforcing information learned in class at home can help cement the information and set her daughter up for success.

We finished the night with a devotion on gracious generosity… and many bad dad jokes (@Joseph). We look forward to seeing what the rest of the week has in store for us!
