LIttle Hearts Project Underway!

Wednesday, September 17

The first members of the 2014 Little Hearts Project cardiac surgical team have hit the ground running. After arriving in San Pedro Sula shortly before lunch yesterday, we made our way to Hospital Cemesa (www.hcemesa.com) where we were greeted by a hallway full of patients. Drs. Zellers, Nikaidoh and Clay, with Dr. Fonseca from Cemesa, spent the afternoon performing echocardiograms using a new ECHO machine. This machine was purchased, in part, with funds from a Rotary International Grant to establish a permanent pediatric cardiac unit in San Pedro Sula which will open during the winter of 2015. For those of you who are Rotarians, THANK YOU!

On the Barnabas House front, the house is FULL. Every bed in every room has a mom and child in it. There is lots of chatter, much laughing, and lots of anticipation! Berta is feeding the masses in her calm and caring way.

Early in the morning, three patients will head back to the hospital for the first cardiac catheterizations of the week. This is a miracle! Earlier this week, it was determined that the cath machine at Cemesa would not be functional in time for Thursday’s scheduled caths. These caths will take place because of an unprecedented partnership between Hospital Del Valle and Cemesa with the loan of equipment and equipment parts to make it all happen.

Our thoughts and prayers go with them as they travel, have their procedures, and head back to the Barnabas House.

Please continue to pray for those team members who will arrive today.

From the Barnabas House,

Patti Wagner
